MR. OMAR ABDULLAH*

Omar Abdullah is the Chief Minister
of Jammu and Kashmir. He was a Member of the Parliament of India and
prior to that worked for one of the most reputed companies in India.
He is the Chairman, Nawa-i-Subh Charitable Trust and also the
founder member, Rahat Charitable Trust.
Mr. Abdullah was born on 10th of
March 1970 at Rochford, Essex (U.K.). He is married and has two
sons. Mr. Omar Abdullah has done his schooling from Burn Hall
Srinagar and Lawrence School Sanawar, He did his B.Com. from
Sydenham College, Mumbai University.
Mr. Abdullah was first elected to
the Parliament (Lok Sabha) from the Srinagar / Budgam
Parliamentary Constituency in 1998. He was re-elected to the 13th
Lok Sabha from the same constituency in 1999. He served as a union
Minister of state for commerce and industry from 13 Oct. 1999 to
22 July 2001. Subsequently, the then Prime Minister entrusted him with
the most important portfolio of Union Minister of State for
External Affairs. He was re-elected to the 14th Lok Sabha in 2004
for the third time, from Srinagar –Badgam Parliamentary
Constituency.
Mr. Abdullah’s immediate concerns
are finding a lasting solution to the Kashmir imbroglio, solving
the unemployment issue and economic reconstruction of the state.
As a result of the leadership
qualities he has displayed over the decade in active politics, he
was nominated as a Global Leader for Tomorrow by the World
Economic Forum in 2000-2001. He has led many Indian delegations to
various parts of the world including:-

Conference on Racism in Durban, South Africa, 2001;

Prime Minister`s Special Envoy to Libya in 2001

He is one of
the very few parliamentarians who were the panelists in the
Special Economic Forum Annual Meeting at New York, 2002

Pilani (Rajasthan), Post Graduation in Industrial
Management from IISC,
Bangalore, MIE
(India)- Member
Indian Institute of Engineers (India) and FIIETE-Fellow of
Indian Institute of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers.
Commissioned in the INDIAN AIR FORCE in 1963 as Aeronautical
Engineer (Electronics) and served for 20 years in various
capacities, including:
a)
Asstt. Director, Ministry of Defence, Govt. of India;
b)
Secretary, Defence Services Officers Institute, New Delhi.
c)
Participated actively in Indo-Pak war 1965 and 1971.
Awarded VISHIST SEVA MEDAL by the President of India
on the eve of Republic Day in 1982 for rendering a distinguished
and Meritorious Services. While serving as Squadron Leader
resigned from the IAF prematurely in October, 1982. Elected Member
of J&K Legislative Council in January, 1984. Inducted as Cabinet
Minister in J&K Government in 1986 and worked in different
portfolios
viz. Forest,
Tourism and Health & Medical Education.
Elected Member, J&K Legislative Council in March, 2007.
Inducted in the J&K State Cabinet in July 2009 and allotted with
the Portfolio of Medical Education, Technical Education, Youth
Services & Sports. Led J&K Tourism delegation to Nepal-1988.
Member, Govt. of India delegation which visited South Korea,
Indonesia, Bangkok and Thailand etc. to study the Family Planning
and Welfare Measures-1988. Appointed AICC Observer in 1993
Assembly Elections for Himachal Pradesh by the President AICC.
Member, J&K Rajya Sainik Board, J&K since 1999. Member, National
Advisory Committee of
NCC, Govt. of
India from 2003 to 2006. Appointed AICC Observer in 2007 for the
Punjab elections by the President AICC.
